Introduced by 'The Ultimate Travelling Camp'
Kumbh Mela is the world’s largest gathering of sadhus, seers, fortune tellers and seekers of salvation. With a history that dates back to thousands of years, it is an affirmation of faith and a pilgrimage of hope for millions who gather in observance of India’s most renowned religious event. There is a spiritual, mesmerising and almost epiphanic ambience that leaves an indelible mark on the minds of all those who visit. It is an auspicious fraction of time when the stars and planets align in a leveraged position to influence the soul of all living creatures assembled at the mela.
Allahabad or the ancient city of Prayag is considered to be the most auspicious site for Kumbh. Located at the Sangam (confluence) of sacred rivers Ganga and Yamuna with the mythical river Saraswati, this site is regarded to be replete with cosmic energy.
The Kumbh Mela is a magnificent milieu of humanity. Hindu holy men sporting dreadlocks and smoking from their chillums (pipes) or practising complex asanas are sights that greet you here. Naga sadhus in vibrant garlands of marigolds, sit smeared in holy ash oblivious to the freezing cold of the North Indian winter. Fortune tellers look into the futures of hopeful devotees. Tinsel tridents glitter in the dawning morning sun. The chanting of a million voices united in their journey to find salvation, the hypnotic rhythm of worship bells punctuated by divine blows of conchs. It is indeed the perfect place for a multi-sensory exploration of Indian culture and the power of its inherent spirituality and faith.
In the words of Mark Twain who witnessed the Kumbh Mela of 1895, “It is wonderful, the power of faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak, the young and the frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining.”
